چکیده

We developed an algorithm to find and characterize gravitationally lensed galaxies (arcs) to perform a comparison of the observed and simulated arc abundance. Observations are from the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH). Simulated CLASH images are created using the MOKA package and also clusters selected from the high-resolution, hydrodynamical simulations, MUSIC, over the same mass and redshift range as the CLASH sample. The algorithmʼs arc elongation accuracy, completeness, and false positive rate are determined and used to compute an estimate of the true arc abundance. We derive a lensing efficiency of 4±1 arcs (with length …6′′ and length-to-width ratio …7) per cluster for the X-ray-selected CLASH sample, 4±1 arcs per cluster for the MOKA-simulated sample, and 3±1 arcs per cluster for the MUSIC-simulated sample. The observed and simulated arc statistics are in full agreement. We measure the photometric redshifts of all detected arcs and find a median redshift zs = 1.9 with 33% of the detected arcs having zs>3. We find that the arc abundance does not depend strongly on the source redshift distribution but is sensitive to the mass distribution of the dark matter halos (e.g., the c–M relation). Our results show that consistency between the observed and simulated distributions of lensed arc sizes and axial ratios can be achieved by using cluster-lensing simulations that are carefully matched to the selection criteria used in the observations.

Statistics of Giant Arcs in Galaxy Clusters

We study the expected properties and statistics of giant arcs produced by galaxy clusters in a ΛCDM universe and investigate how the characteristics of CDM clusters determine the properties of the arcs they generate. Due to the triaxiality and substructure of CDM halos, the giant arc cross section for individual clusters varies by more than an order of magnitude as a function of viewing angle. ...

Cluster Arc Statistics

We study the strong gravitational lensing properties of galaxy clusters obtained from N-body simulations with standard ΛCDM cosmology. We have used the 32 most massive clusters from a simulation at various redshifts and ray-traced through the clusters to investigate the giant arcs statistics. We have found that ∼ 40 − 50% of the clusters that produce giant arcs give multiple arcs, which agrees ...

Measurement of mass distribution of galaxy clusters using the giant luminous arc statistics with Le Fèvre et al.’s arc survey data

We have constructed a scheme to predict the number of arcs that should be observed in clusters, that fully takes into account both the detection conditions in the arc survey and the evolution of the source galaxies. The scheme has been applied to Le Fèvre et al.’s arc survey data in order to constrain the models of cluster mass distribution. The canonical model of the source galaxy evolution pr...

A search for gravitational lensing in 38 X-ray selected clusters of galaxies

We present the results of a CCD imaging survey for gravitational lensing in a sample of 38 Xray-selected clusters of galaxies. Our sample consists of the most X-ray luminous (Lx ≥ 2 × 10 erg s−1) clusters selected from the Einstein Observatory Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey (EMSS) that are observable from Mauna Kea (δ > −40o). The sample spans a redshift range of 0.15≤ z ≤0.823 and includes...
